From Biology to sustainable fashion: Sofia’s journey towards a greener planet

Hello! I’m Sofia, a Master's student at the University of Bristol, studying Science Communication for a Better Planet. My passions lie in sustainability, fashion and nature.

When I’m not immersed in university work, you’ll find me knitting, cooking new recipes, hiking, or swimming—though I prefer the warm waters back home in Italy!

After earning my BSc in Biology, I chose a creative path in environmental science. My course covers diverse communication forms: podcasts, articles, social media, live TV, filmmaking, and policy documents. This year, I’ve explored numerous ways to convey environmental issues to various audiences.

I’ve addressed many climate-related topics, from wildlife film-making storytelling to the impact of expansive agriculture on biodiversity. However, I overlooked a major pollution source: fast fashion and over-consumption. Given my interest in fashion and sustainable living, I decided to focus my dissertation on sustainable fashion.

As I near the end of my degree, I’m excited to use my skills to promote sustainable, slow fashion and carve out a niche in this innovative field. It’s clear that our consumption habits are harming the planet. Blaming individuals isn’t helpful—it can leave people feeling hopeless and guilty. Instead, embracing sustainable practices in daily life can gradually heal our Earth and reconnect us with nature.

My sustainability journey is just beginning. Some steps I’m taking include checking clothing materials and brand sustainability ratings, opting for low-packaging toiletries, planting wildflowers, avoiding plastic bags, and using reusable ones. I’ve always cooked at home and mended clothes instead of discarding them.

Recently, I’ve started training as a beekeeper, learning about the vital role of pollinators and how to support them. Growing my own food remains a future goal too.

But to finish this piece as I started with fashion, my favourite sustainable brands include iconic Patagonia and two Brighton-based gems Wolf & Gypsy Vintage and Flock which are vintage, second hand independent shops selling jewellery, clothes and more. Another sustainable brand which I would love to buy from one day is the Spanish brand Alohas who sell colourful, sustainably made shoes and sandals.

Thank you for reading! I hope this inspires you to embrace sustainability in your own life.
