Why does something have to be new to feel valuable?

Fashion has always had a complicated relationship with newness. Every season brings fresh collections, fresh trends and a fresh list of things we’re told we need. And yet, how often do we stand in front of a wardrobe full of perfectly good clothes and declare that we have nothing to wear?

Think of that top you loved a year ago. It hasn’t changed, but somehow it feels less exciting. So why do we equate “new” with “valuable”?

The appeal of something new

There’s nothing wrong with a little novelty. Fashion is creative, expressive and always evolving, and discovering something different is part of the fun.

But social media speeds everything up. New brands and trends land in our feeds daily, and it’s easy to feel that what we already own is out of date. A piece that was everywhere a few months ago can feel irrelevant overnight, not because its quality has slipped, but because something shinier has taken its place. We become so focused on what’s next that we overlook what’s already in front of us.

What makes clothing valuable?

We tend to link value with designer labels, expensive fabrics or exclusivity. But value can mean so much more.

My mum’s jacket means more to me than the shirt I bought last week. My grandma’s old coach bag feels special because I’m unlikely to ever see anyone else wearing it. And my aunt’s old wardrobe, from when she was my age, is full of memories I can wear.

Fashion is personal. What makes something worth keeping isn’t set by its price tag or how recently we bought it.

Giving existing clothing a new purpose.

This is where sustainability enters the conversation. The fashion industry produces enormous amounts of clothing, yet the emphasis is still on making something new rather than recognising the potential in what’s already here.

Birdsong approaches this differently, giving clothing a new purpose without starting from scratch. It’s a reminder that creativity doesn’t have to begin with something brand new.

Enjoying fashion doesn’t have to mean constantly replacing what we own. Sometimes it’s about looking at our wardrobes differently, finding freedom in how we style things, and holding on to the pieces we love, along with the stories behind them.

Because there’s value in what already exists.
